Thank you to Rachel from Rachel's Random Resources for inviting me to participate in the blog tour for Death at Lovers' Leap, the third book in Martha Miller series of cozy mysteries set in a fictional village of Westleham in 1948. Death at Lovers' Leap Westleham Village 1948 As Valentine's Day rolls around, Martha Miller finds herself unusually melancholy at the state of her own love life. With husband Stan still missing and with her growing feelings for Vicar Luke still shrouded in secrecy, there’s only one place Martha can go - famous local beauty spot, Lovers' Leap. Legend has it that those with a broken heart throw themselves off the bridge that spans the river, but Martha is certainly not about to do such a thing! But it looks like someone else has had other ideas…. Because there in the river, Martha finds a body. But is this misadventure, a moment of lovesick madness, or is foul play afoot? Martha knows one thing…the villagers of Westleham have another crime to solve! Let the investigation commence! Find out if Martha and Luke can catch the killer in a brand new Martha Miller mystery from bestselling author Catherine Coles. Publication Date: February 16, 2024 by Boldwood Books Publisher: Boldwood Books Purchase Link My thoughts: Death at Lovers' Leap is the third book in Martha Miller Mysteries set in the post-war rural Britain. I'm a big fan of Catherine Coles' writing style- deceptively simple, but extremely engaging and full of realistic memorable details. If you are wondering whether you need to read the first two books before embarking on this one, the beginning of the story contains a very useful recap which will bring a new reader up to speed with the series in no time at all. Martha, despite being quite reserved, is an extremely likeable character who has managed to make quite a few friends in the village. If you read the second book, you will remember we were left on a cliffhanger as far as her relationship with her sleuthing sidekick the dashing vicar Luke Walker is concerned. Their life circumstances seem to make it impossible for them to be more than friends. Of course, we've all been expecting the third book to see if we are going to get more news about where and why Stan Miller disappeared, leaving Martha desperately destitute and lonely. Luckily, she managed to integrate into the village life, not least thanks to her sleuthing successes. When Martha finds another dead body, the victim's mother, who is convinced it couldn't have possibly been a suicide, asks her to find the murderer of her son. The mystery itself is pretty straightforward and you will probably guess the culprit and their motive quite early on. Still, we get more developments on the romance front and other important relationships and get introduced to a few new characters. The book has practically no subplots which makes it easier to read, but also makes it appear an interlude. The important thing is that the story never drags and leaves you both entertained and looking forward to the next instalment. As with the previous books, I really liked the historical details and the bigger context in which the story is set, including the rationing books which play an important part in the story. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who enjoys historical mysteries. Thank you to Rachel from Rachel's Random Resources, Netgalley and Boldwood books for the review copy provided in exchange for an honest opinion. Author Bio

His gaze bore into hers. “People staring at us? Yeah, I feel it.” Not that she blamed anyone. Ethan in his tux. Her O.T.T. dress. The fact that they’d been holding this highly provocative pose for way too long… Who wouldn’t want to watch to see what happened next? “No,” he said. “This. Catching Up with the Series: More Than Pancakes More Than Cookies More Than Rum More Than Pizza More Than Cocoa More Than Candy Corn My thoughts: Another gorgeous instalment in Christine DePetrillo's sweet sweet Maple Leaf series! If you have read the first five books, you'll be delighted to see the familiar faces and their happily-ever-afters (although let' face it, we never doubted our favourite couples are meant to last). This time it's Grady O'Donnell and Lena Clover's story and, of course, you're going to fall in love with this couple too! Grady's life's been touched by tragedy in his home Ireland. Now he's busy running a successful pub, painting dreamy pictures that celebrate his family's romantic lore and taking care of his lovely beagle. His friends would love to see him settle with a good caring woman, but Grady's happy to stay true to his past until...he meets Lena who is helping his friends with their wedding preparations. Lena has her own reasons for putting dating and romance on the back burner. Both of our protagonists seem settled and content with their loveless lives and yet when they do meet there's an instant connection. Christine DePetrillo knows how to create strong and independent characters with a heart of gold. Grady and Lena's story draws you in from the word go and it sure made me stay up all night turning pages. There was danger, suspense and intrigue on one hand, and sweet kindness that only comes when you're ready for a second chance in life and know it can blossom into something special. I would recommend this book to anyone who believes real romance is based on respect and understanding. Great ending to a great series! Author Bio:
Christine DePetrillo can often be found hugging trees, conversing with dragonflies, and walking barefoot through sun-warmed soil. She finds joy in listening to the wind, bathing in moonlight, and breathing in the fragrances of things that bloom. If she had her way, the sky would be the only roof over her head. Her love of nature seeps into every story she tells. As does her obsession with bearded mountain men who build, often smell like sawdust, and know how to cherish the women they love. Today she writes tales meant to make you laugh, maybe make you sweat, and definitely make you believe in the power of love. She lives in Vermont with her husband and many woodland creatures who defend her fiercely from all evils. Author Links: Website | Newsletter | Bookbub | Goodreads | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Tiktok Today is my stop on the blog tour for the second book in Christine DePetrillo's lovely Maple Leaf series. It's a sweet and entertaining romance set in a small Vermont town and it is out now, so if you are a fan of the genre make sure you check it out! About the book: "I don't usually trust my heart, but I know it's not lying to me about you." Sage Stannard is grumpy. Having just attended her cousin’s wedding in California, she’s at her limit for watching happy couples stare dreamily at one another. She’s never had anything but quick romps back home in Vermont that always turn out to be mistakes. Big ones. Maybe moving out of her mother’s house and taking a stab at online dating will add a little excitement to this caterer’s stale life. Maybe it’ll bring more disappointment. Who knows? Chainsaw artist Orion Finley is on a mission to get his daughter, Myah, back from his ruthless ex-wife. Only trouble is his ex-wife is a crafty lawyer with connections—ones that give her the upper hand. She even managed to get custody of his dog, Ranger, just to drive the stake deeper into his heart. His father always told him women were poison, especially the pretty ones. Why hadn’t he listened? Well, he was listening now. When Sage and Orion meet over a bloody couch, the gates are opened to a path neither of them is quite ready to travel on. Will they stumble? Will it be all uphill? Or will the end of the path be just the new beginning they need? Buy Links: Get Your Copy Today! Catching Up with the Series: More Than Pancakes More Than Cookies More Than Rum More Than Pizza More Than Cocoa More Than Peaches More Than Candy Corn My thoughts: If you've read More than Pancakes, the first book in Christine DePetrillo's Maple Leaf series, chances are you are already in love with her sweet, but strong and caring characters Lily and Rick, and I bet you couldn't wait to read the next story. You will also be delighted to find out Rick and Lily also make appearance in this new book, although this time it is about Sage Stannard, Rick's cousin. The story begins with Lily and Rick's wedding and happy as they are for their cousin's future marital bliss, Sage and Hope can't help longing for meeting someone who'd love and cherish them as much. Unfortunately for Sage, she hasn't had much luck with relationships that turn out to be short-lived. Sage would love to move out of her mother's home, but then she gets a shock of her life by finding a shot man in the living room of her recently found dream house. A brief conversation in the hospital where Sage took Orion Finley and Sage knows this quiet man has been hurt and is going through tough times fighting his ex-wife, but he is also a strong and loyal man, a man after her own heart. Christina DePetrillo knows how to draw you in into the story and make you root for the characters. It is easy to sympathise with Sage and her desire for something more meaningful after numerous disappointments. Orion's bitter divorce has left him unable to trust all women in general. He is a tender father and would do anything for his daughter. Apart from these realistic moments and swoonworthy romance there's also mystery, suspense, and intrigue to keep you turning pages into the small hours. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fast-paced stories with brooding single dads, slow-burn romance with caretaking and drama with a hateful ex. Rest assured, the ending won't disappoint! Can't wait to read the next book in the series! Author Links: Website | Newsletter | Bookbub | Goodreads | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Tiktok Thank you to Rachel from Rachel's Random Resources for inviting me to participate in the blog tour for The Testing of Rose Alleyn by Vivien Freeman and thank you to Vivien for her guest post today. About the book: The Testing of Rose Alleyn England in the year 1900. A vibrant young woman must take control of her destiny. Vivien Freeman’s atmospheric novel brings late Victorian England hauntingly to life in the mind of the reader. In this beautifully written romance, we explore the choices facing an independent-minded woman at a time when women struggled for self-determination. Purchase Links Amazon / Waterstones / Amazon Guest Post by Vivien Freeman Ordinary Women by Vivien Freeman No one is ‘ordinary’… In 1921, when Marie Stopes opened her Mothers’ Clinic for Constructive Birth Control, offering contraceptive advice to married women, she said that it was not uncommon for her to meet women there who had been through twenty pregnancies. I learned this fact from a Woman’s Hour feature just when I was starting to write about Rose Alleyn. The thought of what life must have been like for those women horrified and angered me. It also made me want to explore it, in a work of fiction, through the eyes of a daughter of one such mother as she approaches adult life. At the age of sixteen, Rose has lived through the deaths of a much-loved little brother and sister, a new-born, a still-born, and the loss of a baby late in term, as well as what she has come to understand were five miscarriages. Late in her twentieth pregnancy her mother suffered a fatal heart attack. This traumatic event has fuelled Rose’s resolution never to marry. The tension between this resolve and a developing relationship with her employer, Leonard Pritchard, is one of the strands of conflict in The Testing of Rose Alleyn. If you look hard enough, you can always find exceptions to the general rule that women’s lives in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were prescribed by gender and social status. But they are rare examples, usually helped by the women in question being titled or wealthy or both, and not being opposed by a father or other male relative. Marie Stopes herself is a good example. She came from an enlightened family who encouraged her thirst for knowledge. Even so, when her father died in 1902 and her family faced financial ruin, she was only able to continue her ground-breaking studies due to the patronage of her professor. The illustrious (as she became) Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, upon completing her initial education, had to spend the next nine years undertaking domestic duties, continuing her studies in her spare time, since at first her father was opposed to his daughter becoming a physician. These are some of the women you hear about because they managed to surmount everything that was thrown at them. They were, indeed, the exceptions. In The Testing of Rose Alleyn, I wanted to explore what life would be like for an ‘ordinary’ woman who, because of her humble background, had no lofty aspirations, was not under the patronage of some male, nor of independent means and who, therefore, had to earn her own keep. I wanted to do this also, indeed, especially, because I believe that no one is ‘ordinary’. We all have our own dramas. Every life has incalculable depth. There is no such thing as ‘ordinary’. The fact that Rose has defied expectations and, unlike her three sisters and two of her brothers, has not gone into service at the local Big House, Sawdons, astonishes the rest of her family. It is, as one of her brothers acknowledges, courageous when she chooses the path she does, since she has never worked in a shop, let alone a bookshop. She has, though, as her most loyal family supporter remarks, always been a great reader devouring the very limited library within her reach. For a female as young as Rose to strike out and try to forge an independent life in the busy market town of Widdock is a bold venture in Victorian times. Her struggle to maintain that life, with all that it offers in terms of new cultural horizons and female friendships – not to mention love – against the demands of family loyalty back in her old home village, Markly, is another strand of conflict which runs through the novel. If there is no such things as ‘ordinary’, there are, on the other hand, archetypal experiences, and these need to be celebrated. Giving birth, dying and being witness to these events, celebration and grief, together with activities as everyday as preparing and sharing a meal – these things are perennial and universal. I would like to think that someone from another age could recognise the scenes and experiences I describe in my novel, and that someone from another culture could do so, too. We are all human beings. I choose to celebrate the positive in our human nature and, in my writing, hold it up to the light. My thoughts:
My first book by Zoe Forward and I could tell straightaway she is an experienced author...and a veterinarian! All these wonderful scenes with animal patients (sometimes cute, sometimes heartbreakingly tragic, always realistic)- they must have been based on Zoe's real life experience. Trust me, they were one of the best aspects of the book. The enemies-to-lovers trope is full of tension and passion by definition, but here we have two ER vets with an unresolved conflict from college time being forced into fake dating on national TV, and you know it's a perfect recipe for lots and lots of drama. Add the snark, general grumpiness and (in my opinion justified) Olympic level grudge-holding ability of one of the protagonists and the easygoing 'sunshine' of the other one-no wonder sparks do fly! Dr Amber Hardin might come across as prickly, but when it comes to saving animal lives, she is one of the best. The ER clinic where she's finishing her residency year needs to bring in money and does it by hosting a reality TV show. Amber is contractually obligated to be on camera 30% of her working time. When her 'old nemesis' Ian Todd is brought in on the show, Amber knows she will have to endure working with him for a few months, but then the stakes are raised, as the producers would like Ian to become Amber's love interest. Our protagonists have their reasons for complying with this request, although it certainly makes their relationship super complicated. Ian genuinely likes and respects Amber and would love to get a second chance with her, while Amber struggles working out what is true and what is there just for the sake of rolling cameras. I liked the protagonists. Despite her grumpy, '#NoFilter' reputation, Amber is very truthful, loyal, and down-to-earth person, while there's definitely more to Ian than just his good looks and bright smiles. Whatever happened in the past to drive these two apart, they have a lot in common in terms of their values and their life outlook (their background couldn't have been more different). They are much more friends-who-are-bound-to-become-lovers than enemies, and it worked for me. I loved their first date! I wish the secondary characters were more developed, though. There was a lot of potential with Amber's siblings, each of whom could be a star of their own book. Who would I recommend this book to? Obviously anyone who loves animals and reality TV! It's an easy, entertaining book with likeable protagonists and a perfect happy ending. Hope Zoe Forward turns it into a series and tells us more about Bruno, Joley, Marino, and Nabi. Thank you to NetGalley, Giselle from XBT and the author for the revew copy, provided in exchange for an honest opinion. GIVEAWAY! Hungry for the Wolf
Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo -- EXCERPT: The more Kerry thought about it, the worse things got. And by the time she was done showering off her run and changing into clothes that would have to do, her hands shook. Her stomach roiled, thoughts of hunger pushed away by panic. They had to move. Someone could already be coming for her. What if whoever had sent those gunmen had already tracked her phone? She should have chucked it into the Hudson before they had the chance. Bryan had been taking a shower of his own when she came upstairs, but the water was off now and the house strangely silent. Her father’s friends would be here sometime and she didn’t want to meet them. The people he called friends were all as slimy as they came and even worse than he was. She didn’t want to make small talk or answer questions. What would happen if gunman attacked the house and only her father’s people were here? She was tempted to call him and warn him, but a dark part of her said that he’d gotten her into this mess in the first place. If she hadn’t been moving mysterious boxes for his associates, no one would have attacked the gallery. She’d stopped trafficking in those crates and her father hadn’t insisted that she start up again. But that wouldn’t last forever. His men could handle themselves. And hopefully no gunmen would come. She heard Bryan’s footsteps before he stopped in front of her slightly open door and knocked on the frame, pushing it further open so he could lean in the doorway. “Hey,” he said softly. Her mind flashed back to the kiss, her body suddenly hot before a cold wave of dread washed over her. They’d been out in the open back there. Someone with a sniper rifle could have taken them out. And neither of them would have seen it coming. What were they thinking? Stupid werewolf hormones were going to get them killed. “We need to clear out.” She tried to sound calm, commanding. In control. Her voice didn’t shake, so she was calling it a win. “My father called. He’s loaned this house to a friend and expects us gone before his guests get here.” “How did he know we were here?” Bryan didn’t move into the room, and his voice was all business. Maybe he was trying to pretend the kiss hadn’t happened. Good. They could both pretend and go back to a purely business relationship. One hurdle down. Liar, the voice that sounded a lot like her inner wolf whispered. He’s ours.
GIVEAWAY! Today I'm delighted to participate in the blog tour for Breaking the Friendzone by May Lynn. From the blurb: Revenge is sometimes best served . . . in bed When Lacey Mason was six-years-old, her family moved to the Hamptons. A beautiful location, for sure, but not much fun when you’re the only kid in the area. When Lacey stumbles upon her next door neighbor, Luke Drake, on the beach it is instant friendship. For the next four years they spent almost every waking hour together. But just as summer inevitably turns to fall, all good things must end. When Lacey’s family sells their house and leaves the Hamptons, the pair vow to always stay in touch. But a dramatic meeting when they are teens leaves their friendship in tatters and Lacey’s heart broken. Fast forward seven years, and 22-year-old Lacey returns to the Hamptons. During a night out partying, who does she run into? Luke Drake. The only thing is Luke doesn’t recognize her. At first, Lacey thinks it’s hilarious—a case of karma finally catching up with the golden boy—but then she realizes that all the feelings she’s buried for so long aren’t going to stay buried . . . especially when she and Luke are thrown together by internships at their family run company, Drake-Mason Pharma. Luke Drake wants to be anywhere but the Hamptons, and he certainly doesn’t want to be interning at his dad’s company. Luke’s got a secret plan: make enough money to break away from his controlling father and strike out on his own. Then one night he sees a girl at a club, and after an incredible night together, he discovers that the mystery girl is his childhood friend: Lacey Mason. He knows what he did to her when they were teenagers was wrong and is determined to spend the summer showing Lacey that he’s changed . . . and that they belong together. However, family secrets, including the one that ended their friendship in the first place, may prove to be too much, and Lacey may not be willing to let Luke break out of the friendzone. Available for purchase from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Indigo, Books-A-Million, Kobo, Apple, your favorite US indie bookseller, or your favorite Canadian indie bookseller. Publication Date: October 18, 2022 Publisher: Wattpad Books My thoughts: If you've been following this blog for some time, you probably know that enemies-to-lovers ( tension and passion) and friends-to-lovers (genuine care and trust) are my favourite tropes. So when I saw the description of Breaking the Friendzone and realized it will have both, I simply had to read it. We meet Lacey Mason when this sweet little girl is just about to make her first real friend Luke Drake at Hamptons where her parents bought a house and yes, we know he will be the One. The story fast forwards to Lacey being twenty two, out clubbing wth her friend Rachel, who is in a desperate need to forget her messy break-up. Things get spicy between Lacey and her 'one night stand'- Lucas who doesn't remember their past. Then they thrown in working together and all the drama begins! I loved the dual POV in this book- it adds so much depth and insight how both sides see the situation and what they are feeling. Luke and Lacey's story is complex and based on lots of secrets and family issues, so having both perspectives made everything more engaging. The attraction and chemistry between the protagonists is strong, but this isn't all the book is about- they are complex, flawed characters you can easily relate to and care about. The steamy things were hot, hot, hot! but there's also real connection and feeling. May Lynn's writing style is fun and entertaining with all the banter and passion I look for in my romance books. Now I'm very intrigued about Lacey's best friend Rachel and can't wait to read her story! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own and were not influenced in any way. About May Lynn:

GIVEAWAY!
My thoughts:
I have been a big fan of River Starr ever since I read her trilogy of Atlantis Institute for Dangerous Criminals, so when I saw her new book is coming out, I was delighted. This time we are far away from fae and vampires, we're diving into (or should it be soaring into) a world full of angels and demons. The book starts with a lot of action- Ayla, the leader of the Order of Celestial Paladins (call them angels), is on a rescue mission to liberate one of her warriors Jessa. Ayla took over the position after her fiance/life-mate Merek was captured and killed by the King of Demons, a.k.a. the Angel of Death. And this is how she finds herself begging to exchange Jessa's life for her own, but when she looks into the Angel's onyx eyes, she realises something that should be impossible- they have a strong mate bond, much stronger than what she had with Merek. Now she has only about three days to kill her archienemy and escape his palace. All of this while resisting the pull of their magic that is driving them crazy with desire. I'm not usually a big fan of insta-love, but with the fated mates trope insta-attraction is a given. Of course, Ayla has to re-think everything she knows about her world, but, given that her previous mate is dead, she is unattached, so her struggle is with her oath to the order and her loyalty to the celestial fight. I would have loved to see Luciaus (the Angel of Death) demostrate his magic a bit more and earlier in the book- it seemed like such a cool concept, which could have been explored more. Great world-building, hot and steamy scenes between the fated mates, magic battles with light swords, and a cliffhanger (duly foreshadowed) to make me want to grab the sequel straightaway. an't wait to read the next book! Thank you to Xpresso Book Tours, the author and the publisher for the free digital copy and this opportunity to review the book. All opinions are my own and were not influenced in any way. Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble -- EXCERPT: With one last yank, Sasha tore the restraint collar, popping and fizzing in a shower of sparks from around her neck. In a single stride, she vaulted forward. Her body crashed through the dark glass of the observation room, slamming one of the two men inside against the far wall. In a bumbling fit of terror, the other fell to the floor, scrambled to all fours, then ran screaming for the hallway. As he did, he slapped a large red button on the wall labeled containment breach. The screaming high-pitched wail of an emergency beacon filled the air, the walls around Sasha flickering with intermittent flashes of red. Instinct, strong and powerful, told her to run, but her higher brain held her fast: what they’d done here was illegal, and she needed evidence. She scanned the various consoles. There, a flash drive. No time to waste. Jager’s men must be on their way. Any data she could grab was no good if she couldn’t get it off the ship. Snatching the data stick from the console and looping the lanyard around her neck, Sasha gave one last look to the unconscious man slumped against the floor and turned for the door. She stepped into the strobe-lit flash of the corridor and hovered there, her heart beating fierce in her breast. On either side of the corridor, two pairs of Strykers squared up, the dark brown tones of their flesh offset by midnight black BDUs. They tensed, the banded muscles of their arms taut. No one moved. “I don’t want to fight,” Sasha said over the wail of the alarm, her heart still thrumming. “But I’m not staying locked up here anymore.” “You don’t have a choice.” The one named Alvarez said through clenched teeth. “Get back in, or we’ll put you back in.” Sasha knew she should be afraid of these men, but then she remembered about how easily, accidentally even, she’d killed the whalers. How moments ago, she’d torn a titanium collar from her neck and crashed through a seemingly impenetrable two-inch-thick layered sheet of armored glass. Sasha steeled herself as the four Strykers advanced on her from either side, their fists raised. “I don’t want to hurt you,” she said. The Strykers stopped, exchanging amused glances. One of them closest to her, a man with a cropped mohawk, let out a chuckle. “We’re not the ones who are about to get hurt, darlin’.” Sasha’s skin flushed hot. Her eyes narrowed to slits as she flexed her clawed fingers. “That’s what you think.”
