From the blurb: In April Asher's new Supernatural Singles novel, a witch, freed from her constricting responsibilities, tries to find her place in the world—which might just be with a broody half-demon.Rose Maxwell spent her whole life preparing to be the next Prima on the Supernatural Council. But now that she’s stepped down, it’s time for this witch to figure out who she is and start fresh. Rose is trying to focus on herself, and not think about her impulsive one-night stand with Damian Adams, a half-Demon Veterinarian who she can’t get out of her head. Neither of them is looking for a relationship. When a misunderstanding requires Rose to complete community service hours at Damian’s animal sanctuary it becomes impossible for them to ignore their attraction to each other. A friends-with-benefits, no feelings, no strings arrangement works perfectly for them both. After Rose stumbles her way into a supernatural bounty hunting situation, Damian finds himself back on the periphery of a world he thought he left behind. Damian doesn’t approve of Rose becoming a Hunter, but if there's one thing he's learned about the stubborn witch, it was telling her not to do something was one sure-fire way to make sure she did it. There was only one other option—training her himself and hoping she changed her mind. But seeing Rose succeed awakens feelings Damian never knew he had...and shouldn't have. Because thanks to his ex's hex, he is unable to fall in love. If he does, he'll not only lose his heart—but his humanity. Publication Day: February 7th 2023 Purchase Link My thoughts:
As good as the first one! If you haven't read Not the Witch You Wed and would like to start the series from the second book, it can be read as a standalone. We get enough backstory of what happened to Violet falling in love with her gorgeous Alpha Lincoln and all the events that led to Rose stepping down from her postion of Prima Apparent, so don't worry you won't feel overwhelmed or lost, but if you have choice, start from the first book- Maxwell sisters and their Gran are a joy to behold and April Asher knows a thing or two about writing a super-charged hot and spicy scene. Back to Rose...I loved the relationship the three sisters had in Not The Witch You Wed and it was clear that whatever Rose decides to do with her life now, her triplet sisters are going to back her in every way possible..and this is exactly how the Magic Triad find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Rose tried to rescue two sick mares only to be caught red-handed and sentenced to community service in an animal shelter. She has a super strong affinity to animals (Could this be her purpose in life?), but the job involves dealing with a certain half-demon/veterinarian she had a one night stand with. Mature, responsible, and wise adults as we are, we do know that running into or even worse working with your one-night-let's-have fun-and-go-our-merry-way is a recipe for awkwardness and nothing else, but our little romantic hearts keep believing that no mattter how and where you meet your soulmate, you'll find your way to being with each other. With or without grand gestures. I was a big fan of Violet who needed to let it go and trust her powers and I'm an even bigger fan of Rose who is trying to figure out her place in life, without sugarcoating things or lying to herself. She is strong, capable, and focused on others (people and animals). Sometimes a serious relationship or even an engagement doesn't work out and it's only natural to feel lost until you find your feet again. Pretty realistic and this is what kept me hooked on the story. Plus, Damian is super-hot with his existential broodiness and dedication. These two have some serious chemistry going on... Only a devoted fan of the romcom genre could come up with this level of hotness! If curling up with a paranormal romcom is your idea of happiness, don't miss this sweet and spicy witchy series. Can't wait to read Olive's story, she may be the youngest of the three Maxwell sister, but she sure sounds intriguing! Thank you to NetGalley and St.Martin's Press for the review copy provided in exchange for an honest opinion. APRIL ASHER was hooked on romantic stories from the time she first snuck a bodice-ripper from her mom's bedside table. By day, April dons dark blue nursing scrubs and drinks way too much caffeine. By night, she still consumes too much caffeine, but she does it with a laptop in hand. She pens romantic comedies with a paranormal twist, but also writes high-octane romantic suspense as April Hunt. She lives out her own happily-ever-after with her college-sweetheart husband and their two children. 'Sweet, funny, heartbreaking but uplifting at the same time. I absolutely LOVED this book.' Alice Fletcher doesn’t like to take chances and she certainly doesn’t believe in fate. Three years after the end of her last long-term relationship, she’s in no hurry to risk another heartbreak. But fate has other plans. One day, on her drive home, Alice comes across a man, dazed and lost, by the side of a wrecked car. And with no one else around, Alice goes to help. TV star Jimmy Mack is riding the crest of the career wave one minute, and the next he’s staring at his crashed car. But when Alice comes to rescue him, things start to look up. What Alice and Jimmy discover next changes everything. Fate might have marked them out for each other, but somehow their destinies have got tangled. Will they get their happily-ever-after, or might their time together be shorter than either of them would hope… Join Jill Steeples for this truly ‘out of this world’ romance and a love story to remember. Perfect for fans of Jessica Redland, Cathy Bramley and Miranda Dickinson. Publication Date: May 12th, 2022 Publisher: Boldwood Books Purchase Link My thoughts: A sweet story which is also very difficult one to review without giving spoilers! I really liked Alice Fletcher, the protagonist- she is a hard-working, super-organised PA, someone I would imagine has to be quite down-to earth. At the same time she is kind and romantic. Alice is driving home on Friday the 13th, happily thinking about her weekend, when she sees a car which has clearly been mangled by a horrific accident and a shell-shocked man next to it. Alice doesn't think twice before offering her assistance to Jimmy. Even when she realises he is a TV celebrity, all she sees is someone who needs comfort and help in his admittedly more than unusual predicament. Gradually they get to know each other. There's a special kind of trust, respect, and even tenderness that is growing between them, even when a scandal threatens to tarnish Jimmy's reputation and only Alice is willing to do everything possible to clear his name. Jimmy is sweet, caring, and thoughtful- I dare any reader to try and not fall in love with him, but he has a unique kind of problem that sooner or later will force them to go their separate ways. Or won't it? A very quick, easy read, surprisingly uplifting, despite the sad circumstances in which the protagonists meet. A simple message of living your life to the full and taking care of people around you might be a bit predictable, but it is still true and it still helps to hear it again to make us look around and appreciate what we have. The Blurb: A Woman Fleeing Persecution... Phoebe Atreus is a witch on the run, her carefully crafted rules have kept her alive for the last decade, each one a product of a hard learned lesson. Rule Number One? Trust No One. She's been betrayed one time too many to put her faith in anyone else's hands. Even if the legendary vampire king might be the one person who could protect her from the enemies always one step behind. A Man Whose Abandonment Issues Span Thousands of Years... Lucien Silvano has been king of the vampires for the last ten thousand years, he's fought in wars that have been reduced to legend, rescued damsels in distress, seduced said damsels, and moved on. Immortal life has become a never-ending battle against boredom. Nothing has truly stirred his interest in years, except her. She's the exception to every rule, his Queen, his mate, the one-person Fate declared to be his. The problem? She wants nothing to do with him. What could possibly go wrong? Phoebe refuses to share her past with Lucien, pushing him away at every opportunity, yet unable to resist the chemistry that explodes whenever they are together. Forced back to his castle in Romania to live as his Queen, she starts to forget the rules that have kept her safe, until the secrets Lucien has been hiding remind her why she created the rules in the first place. My thoughts:
The description is actually pretty accurate and, combined with a sweet title and an intriguing cover, is bound to attract anyone who loves paranormal romance with a fair bit of spice. The beginning of the book (an orgy party for bored immortals in a secret fairy realm) had me checking for the book category-yep, erotica was listed among them, so, fair enough...This is the place where our protagonist King Lucien meets his fated mate Phoebe without realising it-of course, where would be fun in that? Once he is clued in by his loyal friend Erik, Lucien hunts huigh and low to find his enchantress, who happens to be on the run from the Witch Council. These parts of the book were quite fast-paced and there was subtle humour, which I absolutely adored. Then there's also the issue of chemistry, which is truly abundant between the two protagonists. At times I thought it was almost as if it is two stories- one of unexpected, powerful, all-encompassing attraction and sexual fulfiment, which is really well-done (again refering you to the book category), and the paranormal storyline- a witch with a bounty on her head who needs to find her stolen grimoirs and discover her real origins, and one of the first vampires, bored out of his mind. Phoebe's story had a lot more developments in it, although there is a cliffhanger at the end which promises more of Lucien's story as well. The pace was a bit uneven. I was hooked at the beginning, up until a third of the book, when the pace started lagging a bit. Things picked up in the final third to give a necessary resolution, which you may or may not agree with. This is a double POV book with lovely icons to show whose narration we are following. There are also some flashbacks from Phoebe's past that give us a glimpse into her complex story. This way we are getting a good insight into Phoebe and Lucien's personalities- talk about sunshine and grumpy- and also see what exactly they are not telling each other, wittingly or unwittingly. I did enjoy the fantasy world created by the author and would like to read the continuation of the story. Can't wait to find out more about Erik who was one of the most likeable characters in the first book. -- EXCERPT: One second [Aiden and Jude] were huddled in the semidarkness; the next, a ring of fire surrounded them. Then their swords were aflame Musicians beat out a rhythm on the drums. Jude and Aiden touched blades briefly, then, as the music shifted, so did they. They turned into two men fighting tooth and nail against each other, with each other, for each other. One went high, the other low; their sparring a dance. They went round and round. The flames circled higher and closer than I expected. Still, they dueled. I saw as Jude stumbled. Jolie gasped, and one of Jude’s swords went flying. The crowd cheered as his other sword was also knocked away with a flick of Aiden’s wrist. Jude stepped away from Aiden. Aiden stepped back in turn, allowing Jude to back away unscathed. Jude melted into the darkness, yet Aiden’s swords kept moving, never stopping. The fire appeared to engulf him but didn’t stop. His swords spun and danced around him, giving him the illusion of wings made of flame until suddenly they were gone. The entire circle pitched into complete darkness and silence as the drums ended. The crowd cheered, I alongside them as my eyes adjusted to change in light. The black figure that was Aiden strode toward me. With the swords in his hands, sure-footed, unmarked, and smelling of hot metal, he wrapped his arms around me carefully and kissed me soundly. The clapping and delight from the fae around us rose into a happy ruckus. He slipped into his shirt, then maneuvered us through the fae to the other side of the clearing, away from the bonfire and into the shadows…
