Another great thriller from one of my favourite authors! I always recommend starting the series from the beginning to understand the background and appreciate the character development, but you can read and enjoy the book as a standalone as well. As usual, the pace is perfect and there is plenty of action to remind the reader why this series is so popular. Her only option is to put the broken pieces of that awful night together and finally come to terms with what happened to her . . . and why. 320 pages Release Date: November 1, 2022 Publisher: Wattpad Books Available for purchase from Barnes & Noble, Indigo, Books-A-Million, Kobo, Apple, your favorite US indie bookseller, or your favorite Canadian indie bookseller. From the blurb: The Santa Killer The Santa Killer is coming to town… One night less than two weeks before Christmas, a single mother is violently assaulted. It’s a brutal crime at the time of year when there should be goodwill to all. When DI Barton begins his investigation, he’s surprised to find the victim is a woman with nothing to hide and no reason for anyone to hurt her. A few days later, the mother of the woman attacked rings the police station. Her granddaughter has drawn a shocking picture. It seems she was looking out of the window when her mother was attacked. And when her grandmother asks the young girl who the person with the weapon is, she whispers two words. Bad Santa. The rumours start spreading, and none of the city’s women feel safe - which one of them will be next? He’s got a list. It’s quite precise. It won’t matter even if you’re nice. Purchase Link Publisher: Boldwood Books Publication date: September 9th, 2022 My thoughts: Dark and grim, but so well-written! If you've really enjoyed reading about DI Barton and his team, you'll be disappointed to find out this is the last instalment in the series. If this is your first Ross Greenwood book, don't worry-it can be read as a standalone and you can always go back and read about the team's previous cases. A single mother is brutally attacked practically on her doorstep. The only witness, her young daughter, who is on the spectrum, draws a basic picture and says two mysterious words 'Bad Santa'. When another woman is assaulted in a similar way and a local DJ receives an ominous letter saying that the Santa Killer is coming to town, the race to solve the mystery and find the attacker begins. Expect lots of suspects, unpredictable twists and turns that will keep on the edge of your seat. Another compelling page-turner from Ross Greenwood! Deputy Tessa Black spots a man disturbing a grave in the local cemetery and gives chase. But when Tessa catches him, she learns that the ghoulish trespasser wasn’t robbing graves; he was burying a box of bones. With the help of her fiancé, park ranger Logan Wilde, Tessa discovers that the remains belong to a missing teenager from a nearby island. After the girl disappeared nine months ago, police labeled her a runaway. Now, though, it’s clear the teenager was murdered. When the only witness is an uncooperative teenager, Tessa and Logan must find the killer before the boy becomes the next target. The Wrong Bones is the tenth novella in Widow Island series written by Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot. If you have been following the series, you are surely going to enjoy this instalment and the happy event at the end of it. It was great to see how the stories from the two authors (Melinda Leigh wrote books 2,3, 6,7, and 10, Kendra Elliot -1,4,5,8, and 9) merge seemlessly. Melinda Leigh's novella are written from the point of view of Deputy Tessa Black, while Kendra Elliot's ones focus on Tessa's best friend Cate, a former FBI agent, who also happens to be Tessa's fiance's sister. Tessa Black has a complicated family life. Her mother has been diagnosed with an early onset dementia and Tessa is taking care of both her and Tessa's much younger half-sister Patience. While Tessa knows nothing is going to change the course of her mother's dementia, she tries to help Patience have as normal and stable life as possible in the circumstances. Luckily, Logan Wilde, Tessa's fiance and the only park ranger on the island, is her rock of strength, and the whole island community pulls together to take care of Tessa's mother. Tessa responds to frantic calls of three kids who have spotted a stranger digging a grave at the island's cemetary. Although the chase Tessa gives the stranger isn't successful, the man drops a box he was trying to bury in the grave and the box is full of human bones. The remains belong to a teenage girl who was clearly murdered, but who is she and who is the monster behind the crime? Suspects abound and Tessa and Logan have to move fast to make sure the killer doesn't get away with the crime. The pace was excellent and there was a lot of action packed into the story which culminated in a nail-biting finish that would have made Hollywood action movie writers proud. Fans of Melinda Leigh know she has a very engaging writing style that compels her readers to keep turning pages until the small hours. From the blurb: For a woman obsessed and a killer in her shadow, remembering the past becomes a mind game in a novel of psychological suspense by New York Times bestselling author Mary Burton. Twin sisters Marisa and Clare Stockton were sixteen when Clare’s body was found in Virginia’s James River. No arrests were made. Fourteen years later, Marisa’s friends and dedicated career as a photographer help her to cope with the open wound of the past. But Marisa still feels the hurt—and the unsolved murder isn’t the only thing haunting her. A recent car crash has erased ten days of Marisa’s memories—a black hole leading up to the accident that’s left her disoriented. Every text and phone call from that crucial missing time has vanished, along with her phone. A photograph she took of the river has disappeared. A new neighbor Marisa believes she knows introduces himself as if he were a stranger. And there’s the growing fear that her near-fatal accident was no accident at all. As dreams of Clare and nightmares of the crash begin to converge, so do two disturbing puzzles fourteen years apart. Putting the pieces together could be fatal. As she struggles to remember everything, Marisa closes in on a killer—without realizing that he’s already closed in on her. My thoughts: I have only recently discovered Mary Burton's books, although she is a very experienced (and prolific!) author. You can tell it straightaway that The Lies I Told is well-written. Mary Burton even manages to pull off all the multiple POVs (there are 6, so by all counts, I should have been hopelessly lost, but, no, it was all very clear). The characters are intriguing, but we're told just enough about them, only what we need to know for the sake of unravelling their secrets and solving the core mystery. Above all, where the autho'r skill shows the most is the choice of the topic: a woman is still desperate to solve her twin sister's murder fourteen years after the event and to top it all she is also suffering from amnesia! Our fascination with twins is endless, especially when one of them is missing and the other one keeps going on, living their life, growing old...To be fair, this can be said about any family where a tragedy took away one of the siblings. Clare Stockton was just sixteen when she went missing. Four days later her body was found in the river nearby. Fourteen year later Clare's case is about to be reclassified as cold. The murderer has never been found and it seems that everybody has moved on and let the past go. Everyone, but Marisa, Clare's twin sister. It is the twins' thirtieth birthday and their older sister Brit has invited their old friends: BFF Jo-Jo, Brit's ex-boyfirend bad boy Jack who nowadays happens to be Jo-Jo's husband, Clare' boyfriend Kurt, and Brit's new flame David. Marisa is still recovering from a car accident that left a ten day hole in her memory. Marisa is serious about her sobriety, having spent years struggling with alcohol and drug abuse, but not everyone thinks (or wants her to) she can turn her life round. The plot was intriguing, but the pace was a bit too slow in the first third of the book. There was a lot of potential, and yet, something was missing. Marisa takes photos of the place where her sister's lifeless body was disposed of by the murderer(s)- imagine the suspense, the tension that could have been created by exploiting this detail, but no, this skittish reader's nerves were spared. It was as if the introduction of all these points of view drew the exposition out unnecessarily. The pace picks up in the last third when we have already discovered the reason why Clare was murdered and it is more or less clear who did it. There are a few red herring male characters, but nothing to make you doubt that you've solved the mystery early on and are waiting for justice to run its course. I found the fourteen year gap required a stretch of imagination. When Marisa wants to go over what happened on the day Clare went missing, her 'friends' are lying- well, everybody is lying in this book, this is the premise, it's just not easy to understand what they are lying about and why- but would there be this level of detail after so much time has passed, unless 'the memory' takes on a life of its own and becomes a well-rehearsed story? but we also get a sense that nobody, apart from Marisa really cares about the past anymore. There is one incredibly unlikeable character and sometimes it felt a bit too much. We all love reading about dysfunctional families, but sometimes you really have to suspend your belief ( 'And nobody noticed? And nobody suspected?!) Marisa herself, on the other hand, is easy to sympathise with as she is the first one to admit her mistakes. She is also the most optimistic one, the one who believes in being able to become a better version of oneself. I would have liked more depth in the villain- we get a few hints about their past, but not enough. I'm glad to have discovered Mary Burton's books- better late than never!- and would love to read more from this talented author. Olivia and Julian are enjoying lazy days in their Spanish villa, a well deserved break from their busy lives. Especially for Julian, who after a lifetime as a carer was thrust into the public eye following the tragic murder of his first wife. The languid heat and peace of the villa is broken only by clifftop walks, sun drenched lunches and cooling swims. Until a chance encounter with Gabriel - an attractive man, many years their junior - changes everything. Soon their idyllic break turns into a dangerous, high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse. Will any of them get out alive? Publisher: Boldwood Books Publication Date: April20th, 2022 Purchase Link My thoughts:
Almost there...Summer is just round the corner...It's time to plan our perfect holidays! And what would they be like without lighthearted romcoms and dark and twisty thrillers? No need to say which category T.J.Emerson's newest release falls into-just look at the seemingly peaceful swimming pool on the cover.... Oh, yes, that yellow chair was just killing me with suspense. I love thrillers with a limited number of characters stuck in a liminal space- a hotel, a villa, a snowed -in cabin, you name it... The protagonists are bound to have sinister secrets. Julian's first marriage wasn't an easy one- he was a carer for his wife Helen who tragically was murdered. All these events seem far away while Julian and his second wife Olivia are enjoying their well-deserved holiday... until they bump into Gabriel, a proverbial blast from the past, someone who knew Julian from his marriage with Helen. Tension grows and a twisty game of cat and mouse begins... While I didn't find any of the protagonists particularly likeable, I liked the unpredictability of the twists- the author definitely kept me guessing throughout the book until the ending. The pace could have been a bit faster, especially in the middle, but it did pick up towards the end. Overall, this book didn't turn out to be a perfect holiday read for me, but I would like to read more from the author who definitely knows how to craft a dark and suspenseful thriller. From The Blurb: Secrets worth dying―and killing―for, in a novel of suspense inspired by a horrific true crime by Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestselling author Loreth Anne White. When the battered body of a female jogger is found beneath the cliffs of an idyllic coastal community, these perfect neighbors suddenly don’t seem so perfect… Lily Bradley is a respected psychotherapist married to a distinguished professor. They live in a dream house with their two children in close-knit Story Cove. Lily lives a well-ordered life. Or so it seems. As a therapist, she knows everyone keeps things hidden. Even her. Then sensual and free-spirited Arwen Harper rolls into town in her hand-painted VW van, her sixteen-year-old son riding shotgun. Overnight, Story Cove’s secrets are no longer safe. Because Arwen might know her new neighbors better than they know themselves. Now someone is dead, and it looks like murder. Brutal and personal. The death invites the shrewd eye of Detective Rue Duval. Rue’s job is to expose secrets. But she’s also an expert at keeping them. As the lives of three women become inexorably entwined, one thing is clear: when it comes to survival, ordinary people can do the most terrible things. My thoughts:
I am a big fan of Loreth Anne White and her dark, atmospheric, and compelling thrillers. The Patient's Secrets had multiple POVs, something I don't normally go for as it can get very confusing, especially when there's more than one timeline. Here this this narrative device clearly drives home the overall message that everyone has secrets behind the masks they choose to wear in different contexts. The plot was quite complex and it seemed everyone was a suspect and no wonder, given that one of the protagonists is a therapist, used to dealing with deep trauma and dark secrets. The twists and revelations kept coming right, left and centre and I couldn't have guessed the ending in a million years! Were the characters realistic- to be honest, I thought it was all a bit too much, but then having learnt at the end that at least a part of the story was based on true crime events, I have to say that sometimes life is stranger than fiction. The Patient's Secret is a real treat for all readers who love a fast-paced, engaging, and multi-layered thriller. Thank you to Rachel from Rachel's Random Resources for inviting me to participate in the blog tour for A Stranger's Revenge, a new legal thriller by K.J.McGillick. A Stranger’s Revenge When art law attorney Abigail Clarke is mistaken for the murdered twin sister she never knew existed, will she be able to outwit a man determined to kill every member of her treacherous family. Thirty years ago, during a thunderstorm, on an isolated street in South Boston, an unidentified two-year-old girl was discovered, abandoned, shot, barely clinging to life. After a thorough investigation, the case was eventually designated to the cold case files until Abigail Clarke, now an astraphobic art law attorney, is mistaken for the murdered twin sister she never knew existed. What the FBI Art Crime Division cannot determine is if Abigail is an innocent bystander or a co-conspirator in her sister’s art fraud crimes. Compelled to uncover all her family’s secrets, nothing prepares Abigail for the disastrous meeting with her murderous brother and crime boss father. Her life is irreversibly changed the more she becomes mired in her family’s treachery. She soon finds herself drawn into a game of cat and mouse by the vengeful killer who methodically plans to execute every member of her family, holding each one of them ultimately responsible for the murder of his own family thirty years ago. Purchase Links UK / US My thoughts: This is my second book by Kathleen Mcgillick and I knew this newest book is also going to fast-paced, action-packed and impossible to put down. Exactly what it proved to be! Abby Clark is an attorney specialising in art law, so when a new client asks her to accompany him to an auction and assist him in purchasing two paintings, she sets aside her irrational distrust of the man and flies to Boston. The auction house unexpectedly withdraws the offer which clearly infuriates Abby's client. On her return home Abby finds out that FBI have identified her...as a possible murder victim. In fact, even Abby herself can't deny she looks a veritable doppelganger of the girl strangled in a dark alley in Boston. A quick DNA analysis confirms what was already obvious to everyone- the victim was Abby's twin sister Aisling Dolan, an Irish national. Abby herself was shot and left for dead at the age of two. While she has a loving family, great friends and fantastic career, she is also suffering from anxiety and abandonment issues related to her early childhood. Time to find out what exactly happened to Aisling and who exactly were her biological parents. Now Abby is quite an interesting character. She is loyal to her friends and her family, but she is obviously quite impulsive, even reckless. Some of her comments about Ireland rubbed me the wrong way- it was as if Abby was determined to see only negative things about her birthplace to simplify her complex feelings about what happened to her as a child. I wasn't so sure about her 'in-built lie detector'. One thing you have to give to Abby- she is decisive and always ready to act. Abby's grandma Stasha with her little thermos of Dutch courage (shhh, don't tell anyone) was a real hoot! I loved the little legal details introduced here and there in the book, from Abby giving her psychiatrist friend Maura help with her unusal predicament to Abby's 'hypothetical' conversation with her partner Gregory. It's clear that the author knows what she is writing about and knows how to pique and keep the reader's interest. The pace is fast and there is quite a high body count in this action-packed thriller. Some settings were extremely evocative and I could easily see this book adapted for the silver screen- Hollywood, are you listening? Overall, this was a very quick, compulsive read, perfect for anyone who enjoys suspense, action, international settings and books about stolen art. Looking forward to Kathleen's next book! Hunted Someone is out to murder Detective Constable Bailey Morgan before she can testify in an upcoming trial. Using her undercover skills, Bailey embarks on a dangerous mission to help the police catch this elusive killer before it’s too late. But it won’t be easy for she’s up against a cunning and ruthless adversary who will stop at nothing to eliminate her. A tense game of cat and mouse ensues, leading to a shocking revelation at the heart of which lies the key to Bailey’s survival. Purchase My thoughts: The DC Bailey Morgan is one of my favourite series of police procedurals and I think it keeps getting better and better! If you haven't read the first two books (Jailbird and Villain, both published by Boldwood Books), don't worry, the author provided a brief summary of what exactly happened to Bailey in the past and how it still affects her daily life. Having said that, these are spoilers and if I were you, I'd start from the beginning and enjoy this very well-written series. Similarly to the first two books, Caro Savage opens this latest instalment with a bang- a professional killer is trying to get information out of a Senior Crown Prosecutor on the only witness in an upcoming trial. Yes, you've guessed it, the witness is our intrepid undercover police officer Bailey Morgan. Once, the victim is found, it is clear that Bailey's life is in grave danger. The undercover operations department have a bold suggestion for Bailey- she is to become a bait for the fantom killer, nicknamed Rex. The hunt begins...and it isn't immediately obvious who is hunting who or who is going to prevail in the end. I found all aspects of the book fascinating. Bailey is a complex character, still dealing with the aftermath of her first undercover job. One thing is indisputable- Bailey has a strong moral compass and a kind and comassionate heart. Is it wrong of me to say that I found the character of Rex utterly fascinating?I don't want to give away the twist that took me by surprise and completely changed Rex and Bailey's deadly game of hunt and surival, both mental and physical. The pace is absolutely fantastic in this book with its short, action-packed chapters. I found it absolutely impossible to put the book down until its gripping, nail-biting climax and epilogue. I dearly love having a peek at the last pages, but this time I wasn't tempted at all- I knew the book is to be savoured, page by page. I can honestly say that I've become a big fan of Caro Savage and can't wait for her next book to come out. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys a well-written, fast-paced police procedural with a strong female lead. Author Bio – Caro Savage knows all about bestselling thrillers having worked as a Waterstones bookseller for 12 years in a previous life. Purchase Link My thoughts: Heather Atkinson is the author of numerous books in the crime fiction genre, but I only discovered this talented writer last year when I read Blood Brothers, the first book in her Gallowburn series. In this book we go introduced to the fictional Gallowburn Estate in Glasgow and four friends who were born and bred in this poverty-stricken community. For Jamie Gray and his Blood Brothers Gary, Digger, and Logan loyalty and family are everything. This action-packed gangland thriller also had unexpected romance, but more about it later. The second book in the series introduced us to new fascinating characters, including fearless Reverend Valerie and Toni McVay, a powerful crime boss. Heather Atkinson's newest thriller Blood Ties is the third instalment, in which Jamie and his friends deal with new threats coming from a new pretender, as well as Jamie's formidable enemy from the past. If you are a fan of the genre (which isn't admittedly everyone's cup of tea) and would like to read the series, it is better to start from the first book and see the development of relationships, including Jamie's whirlwind romance with feisty Allegra Abernathy, which is crucial for understanding the events in Blood Ties. The plot is as fast-paced and gritty as in the first two instalments, and, of course, there are plenty of twists to keep the readers turn pages. The characters are still as colourful as ever (my heart belongs to Jamie's mother Jackie who will not hesitate to get out her weapon of choice- a frying pan- and go into a street fight to get justice for her kids). Heather Atkinson's fans will be happy to read this new addition to the series and find out what life has in store for the Blood Brothers and their families.
