This a sequel to This Time Next Year, although both of these wonderfully entertaining books can be read as standalones.  Synopsis: This Year Maybe Alison and David have been engaged for so long that even Alison’s mother has given up asking when, but it’s second time around for both of them and they’re not in any particular hurry. That said, Alison is beginning to wonder if living with her has put David off the idea of marriage so when he suggests they set a date she is delighted. But that date is six months’ away and a lot can happen in six months – especially if you’re Alison! ‘My son’s been arrested, Great-aunt Millie’s fallen in love, my best friend suspects her husband of having an affair, and I still need to lose weight. I absolutely adored Alison, her family (both immediate and extended), and, of course, her besties Bev and Pippa. Thank you to Liz Hinds for giving me these wonderful laugh-out-loud moments. Alison and David have been engaged for quite a long time. When they finally decide to tie the knot and Alison goes round telling people the great news, everybody is delighted for them and Alison can't help herself but invite more and more guests to the wedding. It is supposed to take place in six months' time, on Midsummer's Day- that's plenty of time, isn't it? especially since Alison's best friends super organised and ever so practical Pippa and unusually creative Bev help her out. Actually, everybody does and that includes Alison's slightly overbearing mother, her vicar Pete, and even the woman her ex-husband left her for! There's never a dull moment with Alison, whether she is trying to buy a replacement for her kettle or book a wedding date for her ninety-year-old great aunt. Life throws her a few curveballs, which I don't want to give away for fear of spoiling your enjoyment of the book, but her loyal and patient fiance David is always there by her side and, if this is not romantic, then I don't know what is. Alison's heart is in the right place and this is how she goes through life: thinking (and perhaps overthinking it) about doing the right thing, forgiving and overlooking other people's faults (who doesn't have them?), and being grateful for the good things she has in life. The book has a wonderful cast of characters, and all of them, are well-written and memorable. If I could sum this book up in three adjectives they would be: hilarious, optimistic, and uplifting. This is one of those books that puts a smile on your face and we all need a bit of sunshine in these uncertain times.
