-- EXCERPT: He stands up and holds his hand out to me. “Well, I’m not ready to let this go. Come into the water with me.” I wipe the sand off my hands and then take his hand. He pulls me up, and I follow him into the surf. “Wow, look at that sunset,” he says. I’m embarrassed that I hadn’t even noticed. I’ve been too caught up in him. “That’s a beautiful one.” “Do you know what they say about first kisses under a sunset like that?” he asks. My chest sears with anticipation. “What do they say?” “That they’re pretty damn amazing.” I wish I could stop my stupid grin, but there’s no way. “It’s not our first kiss.” He takes my hand. “It is for this go-around.” “I think we skipped past kisses last weekend.” “We just did things a little out of order. We still get to have our second first kiss.” “Lucky us.” He looks down at my hand and takes it as the water washes over our calves. The longer he hesitates to kiss me, the more buildup rolls through my body like a big rig. He takes my other hand as well, still not looking into my eyes. I can’t tell if he’s nervous or trying to make me collapse with want.
GIVEAWAY! Death Watch
-- EXCERPT: A pair of guards opened the giant doors, bowing at Thomas as he guided me through. It was an actual struggle not to freeze at the entrance and stare. But man, did I want to. This place—while definitely what I would consider on-brand for a vamp nest—was one of the most magnificent buildings I’d ever been in. I wasn’t particularly interested in other churches, but this cathedral was just a beauty. A gallery of pews sat to the left and right of a wide aisle that led to a raised dais. Vampires filled the seats, dressed similarly to Thomas and me, their voices a low buzz of conversation. More people were sitting in the upper gallery, their opulent gowns and sharp tuxedos a happy reminder that Thomas had my back. Had I walked in here with leather pants and a whip on my hip, I had a feeling I would have been just a touch out of place. Thomas continued his leading, guiding me down the aisle toward a stunningly severe woman sitting on what appeared to be a throne. Skin paler than death, eyes vamped out in a way that seemed permanent, and painted lips the color of blood, she was the most beautiful and yet most frightening woman I’d ever seen. Dark hair was piled on her head in purposefully haphazard curls, a few tendrils snaking out of the complicated up-do to artfully caress her neck. She wore a brilliant green gown that was so simple, and yet so achingly complex, it had to have cost a fortune. We reached the end of the aisle, and Thomas bowed his head slightly. I copied him, wishing I would have received an etiquette lesson on the hour-long drive here. All I’d gotten was Thomas’ clenched jaw and silence. “You have some nerve,” a woman growled, drawing my gaze from what had to be the queen of this nest to her right. I quickly realized that the voice did not belong to a woman at all but a child. Pale-blonde hair and blue eyes were set in an elfin face of a vampire who had likely been no more than ten when she was turned. And that had to have been centuries ago. This little whisp of a “girl”--and I use that word lightly—had the look of a being older than dirt. Dressed in a black lace confection appropriate for a child beauty queen, she stood from her chair. She then launched herself at Thomas. I couldn’t exactly say why I did it. I mean, she had me by centuries, and Thomas could take care of himself. But as soon as her feet left the dais, I had the knife Clem had given me yanked from its sheath and was in front of the man in an instant. Thomas owed me, not the other way around, but he’d been kind to me when I’d needed it, and I wouldn’t let him get attacked. No way, no how. It was as if everyone froze. Conversations halted, guards stood stock-still, and even this slip of a thing stood arrested at the end of my blade, which was poised at her throat. To this tiny—but by no means less deadly—vampire at the point of my knife, I said, “Settle down there, Blondie, or we’re going to have a problem.” I had a feeling we probably already had one.

Janey Trelawney’s Year of Surprising Triumphs Janey’s life becomes more disaster movie than romcom when the ruthless Becca steams in to manage Cheney House. Her job as head gardener in peril and her self-confidence in tatters, Janey must fight back. Finding an ally in Will, who’s more Clark Kent than Superman, it’s up to them to save the day while owner Clare is away having her Shirley Valentine moment. It doesn’t help that everyone is in love with the wrong people! Why can’t people love the one who loves them back? Will Cheney House survive - and will Janey ever get her When Harry Met Sally happy ending? Find out in this warm-hearted romance from the author of the best-selling Millie Vanilla’s Cupcake Café, full of Gregory Peck look-a-likes, snowdrops, cake, and a cocker spaniel called Camilla. Purchase Links UK / US My thoughts: Quirky and uplifting are the two words that describe Giorgia Hill's latest novel the best. Gardeners and galantophiles (in case you aren't familiar with the term-I wasn't!- galantophiles are people who love everything to do with snowdrop flowers) are going to be delighted with the book and all the tips they'd get from it. Janey Trelawney reminded me a bit of Nina Hill. She is passionate about plants and nature, she is quirky in a lovable way, willing to wade in freezing water to save a dog's life, she dances under trees and complains about having to spend a day inside her office, she's flawed, but impossible not to like and respect. Janey goes through a lot of growth in this book, defending her job of the head gardener at Cheney House Gardening Centre, suffers from unrequited love, faces her enemy, overcomes her fears and finds real love. I really enjoyed the setting of Cheney House from the word go. This is a family oriented business with heart and soul, so when the center owner Claire hires Becca, a new manager to oversee the business in her absence, and this manager starts destroying everything Cheney House stands for, you know whose side you are on. Luckily for Janey and the staff, they have a staunch alley- Will, with his heart of gold, understanding, patience, and loyalty. The book is full of sweet and adorable characters, both main and secondary, and you will quickly get immersed into the story with its fascinating plotlines. My first book by Georgia Hill and I couldn't have chosen a better book to get an introduction to this talented author- it is sweet, romantic, and entertaining. Janey's blog posts were so beautifully-written and enticing, I just couldn't resist doing more Internet research (a perfect book for a lockdown) Recommended to anyone who enjoys gardening, quirky main characters, and a lovely happily-ever-after. Thank you to Rachel and the author for the review copy. All opinions are my own and were not influenced in any way. Author Bio Georgia Hill writes warm-hearted and up-lifting contemporary and timeslip romances about love, the power and joy in being an eccentric oldie and finding yourself and your community. There's always a dog. It's usually a naughty spaniel of which, unfortunately, she has had much experience. Her books are firmly rooted in small seaside towns similar to the one she lives in and she loves history especially when it insists on rearing up and battering at the present. As a child she had an invisible friend called Gonky who lived on the third stair from the bottom. As an adult her invisible friends inhabit her head and refuse to leave until she commits them to paper. Readers of her books can escape into a warm bath of words and, no matter what challenges her characters face they will, ultimately, have a happy ending. GIVEAWAY! Thankyou to Rachel from Rachel's Random Resources for inviting me to participate in the blog tour for Photographed in the Writer's Room by Michelle L.E. Price. Photographed in the Writer’s Room Former TV star Brandi Tyler's big screen debut crashed and burned amid rumors of an affair with her married co-star… Now, she wants nothing more than to quietly slink away from Hollywood. When she's offered an opportunity to get out of town and work on a project involving the photographer that launched her career, it seems like the perfect escape! Unfortunately for Brandi, her famous face makes hiding out even a huge city like Houston a little tricky. When the celebrated photographer's son offers to let her use his home for privacy, it seems like everything is falling into place. Little does she know that Michael Ames a gorgeous best selling author, and he comes with the package! As Brandi makes her way through old photographs and new scandals, Michael struggles with his next project, and they both fight the growing attraction between them. Maybe a posse of new girlfriends, some Texas-sized boozy brunches, and a little private time in the writer's room will help this leading lady find her path back onscreen. And, if she can just picture it, maybe this time she'll even find love? Purchase Links US / UK My thoughts: Photographed in the Writer's Room was a lovely romantic escape into the world of celebrities who do have their need for privacy and want to be loved and understood by their romantic partner like anybody else. If you are a fan of slow-burn, clean romances, this book is going to be right up your street! Brandy Taylor, former model /TV show star, who is a household name, is having a bit of a career crisis. Her latest movie was a flop, coupled with vicious rumours of an affair with her (married) co-star. Brandy needs to keep a low-profile for some time. To her credit, she refuses to do any interviews about her charity work, which she has been doing for years- she doesn't want them to be used to repair her public image. What she needs is peace and quiet and a change of scenery. When she finds out that Brighton Ames' family are looking for somebody to help them go through and organise personal archives of the late celebrity photographers, Brandi jumps at the chance. After all, she holds a degree in Art History and is passionate about photography. It isn't easy to stay under the radar of reporters, and Brani ends up having to stay in the house that now belongs to the photographer's son, Michael, who turns out to be a famous writer and a recluse. There's nothing I love morethan a slow-burn romance where the protagonists do get to know each other before giving in to the irrestible pull of attraction. I also enjoyed Brandi's new girlfriends with their unique personalities, people who are not trying to take an advantage of knowing Brandi, but are genuinely supportive. The super-efficient Kayla, who is a bit of a WonderWoman and Franklin, Brandi's PA, also deserve a special mention. Where would celebrities be without people quietly organising their daily routines, sorting out their lunches, gym memberships, all the while keeping an eye on any potential threats to their privacy? Overall, this was a quick and entertaining read with a good build-up and steady pace, and I'll be looking forward to reading more from Michelle L.E. Price in future. Thank you toRachel from Rachel's Random Resources and the author for the review copy, provided in exchange for an honest opinion. Author Bio Born in Montreal but raised in New England, author Michelle L. E. Price has been writing as long as anyone can remember. An avid reader who was on the verge of losing her mind as a mom to two small children, Michelle began writing her first book, Hidden in the Writer’s Room, as an escape… at least her characters would do exactly what she told them to do and she could always count on a happily ever after ending. She also enjoys wine, re-watching 90’s sitcoms and occasionally running, but heavily relies on writing to stay sane. Michelle is a firm believer that laughter and love are the best parts of life. -- EXCERPT: “Why so ssstill?” The voice came from behind me, but my muscles were still locked tightly, so I managed to stand still. My eyes closed as I smiled because I knew that voice. It was Hiss—the winged snake, the one I’d convinced myself had been nothing but an imaginary creature. The joy I felt to realize that he was back was overwhelming. I didn’t care if he was imaginary. All I cared about was that he was there. “Hello, Pain Seeker,” he said when I pushed myself to sit up and watched him slithering his way down the wall below the windows. “Hello, Hiss,” I said in a half a voice. His smooth scales turned all shades of green as he moved. He was fascinating, even though his hood was not visible at the moment, and neither were his wings. His eyes, though, took my breath away all over again. All ten of them, like molten gold, were focused on me when he stopped in front of my knees and rose up. “Do you want to go on an adventure with me, Pain Seeker?” The words caught me off guard, but the response was automatic. “No.” The snake’s jaw opened, and he smiled, his tongue coming out to taste the air. “Why ever not?” “Because I’m a prisoner. I don’t have my freedom.” I didn’t have my life at all. “You are no prisoner here,” Hiss said, lowering his head on my lap before he slithered up my body, around my waist and up my back. His head came out from under my hair, right next to mine. “There is nobody here who can take anything away from you unwillingly. Why do you stay?” “Because I have no place else to go.” My heart broke as I spoke the words. It broke at the truth in them—so deep. So final. “The world is a great place—and not the only one. You can go wherever you want,” he hissed, his tongue licking my cheek every few seconds. The warmth from his body slipping into mine was the closest thing to heaven I could imagine. Slowly, I touched his smooth skin with my fingertips. “How?” I asked, just to keep him talking, to keep him on me for a little longer. “You’re living in a Shade,” he said. “The Shade is a powerful thing. More powerful than anything out there. You know this, don’t you?” I looked up at the ceiling with a new eye. A Shadergrit. I’d read about Shades all my life, but I had never been in one before. There were twenty-three of them in existence. They were creatures, guardians—Gateways to the worlds. They were giant beasts who lived on the ground and grew towns, cities, countries on their backs. Magic fueled them. It was why the fae had taken over all the Shades in Gaena—they had a lot more of it than elves did. To the other worlds, they were safe havens for every creature who possessed magic in their veins. They were homes, workplaces, battlegrounds—anything you needed them to be. “I’m in a Shade?” I whispered to the ceiling, unable to stop the train of thought that was running through my mind. Everything I’d read about Shades was coming back to me, and I only picked up the things I needed. Like the fact that a Shade could provide for its subjects anything they needed—in exchange for magic. Magic that I had, unlike most elves in existence. “You are. It’s a very powerful one, though not as big as some. You can ask it for what you need,” Hiss whispered in my ear. I could ask the Shade for what I needed. But what did I need, really? “I need to die,” I breathed, surprised at my own words. At yet another deep truth in them. “Good—so die. We all need to kill parts of ourselves every once in a while. It’s the only way we can shed old skin and evolve,” he whispered. “Because that, my dearest Pain Seeker, is the purpose of all that lives: to get better.” He laughed, and the sound was like waves moving in the ocean, deep and calming, but powerful at the same time. “It’s going to be over soon,” I told Hiss as I looked at the door. “My captor knows I can get out of my chains. Any moment now, he’s going to come in here and finish me.” After two long days. I wished I’d known I was in a Shade before, though. Maybe I wouldn’t have felt as alone as I did until now. “Ah, yes. Maceno Iarnea, the Winter prince. I have heard a great deal about him today,” Hiss said and moved around my neck and to the other side of my face, resting his jaw on my shoulder. I kept on playing with his scales. It was very relaxing for whatever reason. “Maceno,” I whispered to taste the name on my tongue. “His people call him Mace. They hate him as much as they fear him.” My fingers stopped on his skin. “Who hates him?” “His people, Pain Seeker,” Hiss said, like I’d asked a ridiculous question. But it was his answer that was ridiculous. “Why would they? They’re all fae.” And fae hated elves, not one another. “The species doesn’t matter. Fear breeds hate in every kind—and your prince is no exception to this rule. But he is an outcast.” I absorbed every word he said like it was the most important thing I would ever hear. Where did this curiosity about my captor come from? “What does that mean?” “It means he was banished from his Court by his father, the King.” Hiss moved away from my shoulder and licked my cheek once more. “I don’t know why, as I wasn’t able to listen properly, but he was cast away from his home, given these men to command, and sent as far away from his kingdom as possible.” All the pain in the fae. Was this where it came from? “Tell me more,” I asked Hiss and continued to slide my fingers down his scales as he moved from one side of my face to the other, licking my cheeks. I didn’t realize he was warming me with it until I felt them flushing. “He has never lost a battle in his life. He has never been defeated, by elf or fae. Before angering his father, he, out of seven sons, was the most favored to inherit the throne when the King decides to retire. Or dies,” Hiss continued. “He’s difficult to speak to, likes to keep to himself, and works his men harder than most commanders all day.” “And where did you hear this?” “I’ve spent the day wandering around the Shade, listening to whispers. I am a collector of wisdom, and I have collected a lot of it today,” Hiss said, his tongue now licking my dry lips. “Why did you do that?” “For you, Pain Seeker. Information is food for the brain. Without it, we wither.” “But why?” Why did he think it mattered if I withered or not, when I was going to die soon? “Because you showed me kindness in a world driven by cruelty. You gave me your food when you were starving. You gave me your gift without asking for anything in return. I’ve lived a long life and know how to appreciate small acts of kindness, for they can only be done by great people.” I smiled, watching all of his ten eyes right in front of mine. “Do great people allow themselves to be fooled and poisoned by their own people, and chained to a wall by their sworn enemies, Hiss?” “No,” he said, and again, he laughed that wavy sound. “But great people don’t hold others responsible for their misfortunes. They don’t see justice in treating others the same way they were treated. They don’t kill, even when they can, even when they know they should, in the name of the greatest gift we all have--life,” Hiss said, and slowly, he began to unwrap himself from around me. I felt empty where his presence had been a second ago. “To nine of my eyes, that you haven’t killed the prince yet is akin to insanity, but the tenth sees through it. Past it.” He stopped in front of me, his body wrapped in a bundle, his face right in front of mine. “You make little sense to me,” I said honestly. “But I’m glad you found me, Hiss. Even if you are not real.” “Sleep now, Pain Seeker. Tomorrow comes another day,” he said, the same second his black wings sprouted from his sides, and he jumped right over my head. I watched, mesmerized, as he disappeared once more in the darkness of the night, leaving me alone. I wondered, was this all just a dream? Was I at home, in my room, on my bed, sleeping? Hope sparked in my chest. If it was true, now was the time to wake up. I would slip into sleep and hope to wake up in my bed, surrounded by my people. I lay down on the stone floor, the warmth Hiss had given me already fading away. But I no longer felt completely alone. I was in a Shade. Pressing my hand against the floor, I released some of my magic, as if I were trying to search for pain in the stone. Warmth, I asked the Shade. Please, give me warmth. It could have been my imagination, but deep in my mind I felt a presence, a connection I had never felt before. It was like a shadow slipping through my thoughts, analyzing them, collecting them. The stone floor heated up. I didn’t question it. I didn’t allow myself to feel any different, for fear it would slip away. If this was my imagination, all that mattered was that I wasn’t cold anymore. Then, I slept.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo -- EXCERPT: I should have landed on him, but instead I dropped to the floor on my hands and knees like a wounded deer. An electrical sensation zapped through my middle and wrapped around me like invisible arms, holding me in place. Hundreds of needles pricked me all at once. Excruciating pain seared from head to toe. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t even blink. I had been wounded many times on missions, but nothing I’d felt in ISAN compared to what had just hit me. Immobile, a foot from my monster of a brother, I’d never felt so vulnerable. My muscles simply shut down. A whimper escaped me, but it could have been only in my head. Worse, a tear slid down my cheek. I felt humiliated beyond measure. “Aw, sis. Are you crying? Does it hurt?” Gene took his hand out of his pocket and showed me a metal trinket, a circle about the size of his thumb. “I thought it was best to have it handy in case you lost control.” He came dangerously closer and lowered, his warm breath brushing the shell of my ear. “Now you know, sis. I can contain you. You might want to show me some respect if you don’t want to be on the ground, helpless and weak. I might accidentally hurt you. We don’t want that do we?” Oh, the pain. Every tiny movement—every blink—hurt so much. He ran a knuckle down my cheek to wipe away another teardrop, and then grazed his index finger slowly across my neck, savoring my weakness. “Next time it won’t be so soft,” he said. “You should get some rest. You look like hell.” I screamed in my head. Peering up under my eyelashes, I watched him walk toward the sliding door. I wanted to rip out his throat, stomp on his heart, but I couldn’t move. Even a fraction of movement felt like a knife slitting deeper into my spine. I couldn’t win. At least not this time. But I would find a way. There had to be a way. Gene’s back to me, he held up that metal circle trinket and clicked. Just as the door blended into the wall, he released me. I thumped my head on the tile floor and wept for Brooke and the rebels who had died because of my stupid mistake. Groaning, I crawled like a worm, my knees and elbows digging across to get to the rug, each movement agony. I refused to lie on the cold ground like I was nothing. I’d never felt so small. No—I had, when my foster father beat me. Where was he now? Locked up. That would be Gene’s fate, too. Just you wait, big brother. Just you wait. Karma is a bitch.
GIVEAWAY! Thank you to Rachel from Rachel's Random Resources for inviting me to participate in the blog tour for On the Road to Love ( Love in the City#1) by Melissa Baldwin. On the Road To Love From bestselling romantic comedy author Melissa Baldwin comes the road trip of a lifetime! Successful Manhattan accountant Stacy Brown is shocked when her almost perfect life unexpectedly crumbles around her. Blindsided by her husband when he serves her with divorce papers and tossed aside by the women she considered her best friends, devastation and depression hit her hard. But when her mother sends her an old photograph of her and two childhood friends, Candace and Olivia, it fuels a desire in Stacy to find that person she once was. What starts as a chance to reconnect turns into an unforgettable road trip back to her childhood home and an encounter with a man from her past. Gavin Kingsley, son of Stacy's old piano teacher and former annoying boy next door, sparks something in Stacy that she hasn't felt in a long time…maybe never? Despite her hesitation to jump into a relationship, Stacy can't help being drawn to him as she and her girlfriends take a journey of self-discovery, laughs, tears, and hysterical moments. Can returning to her past give Stacy everything she's been searching for in her future? Purchase Links UK / US My thoughts: On the Road to Love is the first book in Melissa Baldwin's series Love in the City. Now that I've read Stacy's story, I will definitely continue with the series to find out more about her childhood friends Olivia and CJ. The book was just so lovely and optimistic, it was like a ray of sunshine. Stacy is a successful accountant in New York. She and her husband Greg have been focusing on their careers, but they also have a beautiful house and a large group of friends. Stacy is quite content with her life (why shouldn't she?), until one day, out of blue, Greg serves her with divorce papers. You'd expect this is the time when your girlfriends are going to double their efforts to spend more time with you and help you get through this tough period of life....This is not what happens... The invites are few and between and Stacy begins to wonder if these people she considered to be her friends ever cared for her. When her mum sends her an old photo, Stacy tries to re-connect with the two girls in it, hoping to re-claim her old, carefree, happy-go-lucky self. She also has a briliant idea of driving to her parents' home in Florida, and doesn't have the heart to say no, when one of the girls invites herself to join the trip. In fact, why not invite the other friend too? never mind the fact that they seem to have some big, unresolved issues. Perhaps, it is their chance to work them out. Stacy has had a tough time at the beginning of the book, but I loved the way she concentrated on the positives. She was also genuinely kind and generous. One of my friends who got married and divorced quite young told her how tough it was to navigate the post-divorce social life. So, this part sounded absolutely realistic. I really like the development Stacy's character goes through in the book. She has to re-think her life decisions and what really makes her happy. Including a new man in her life. Or rather an old friend who grew into an incredibly good-looking man with a wicked sense of humour.... This short book was light, entertaining, and so much fun. The message is really positive: there are second chances in life, both in love and friendship! I can definitely recommend this sweet and clean rom-com to anyone who loves a good self-discovery story with a HEA.
