My thoughts:
Loved it! Sooooo good... First things first, I'm not a kind of person who would be overly enthusiastic about a blurb mentioning One of Us is Lying. Scream? now we are talking. Mary Shelley? oh, yes, please. I love Frankenstein (with its monumental influence on our popculture) and I love the story behind its creation. In this case, the publicist's description was spot on and I enjoyed every minute of this wild ride. Rachel Chavez is the proverbial new girl in a new school. Something bad happened to her last year which made her mum and Rachel move and change their job and school respectively. The only thing Rachel's mum insists on is Rachel keeping up her grades (you begin to wonder what exactly happened to have sent her into a spin last year, right?) and make friends. Which she kind of does. She even gets dragged (not literally, we haven't started on the horror part, but we'll get there, don't get too comfortable) to a teenage party in an abandoned house. A prank is played and the scene is set. Rachel makes an enemy of a popular girl who won't stop spreading her unsolicited opinion of Rachel ('Freak!). When Rachel finally confronts the prankster, she discovers the existence of the most mysterious and be default exclusive The Mary Shelley Club. Perhaps, she has finally found 'her own tribe', people who appreciate horror movie tropes in all their marvelous variety and see the genre the way Rachel does- as a cleansing mechanism to flush out all the wrong things in one's life, an injection of adrenaline and courage. Perhaps, this is her way to face what happened to her, the changes in herself and her biggest fear. Perhaps, she can belong. But first, she needs to pass the Fear Test, and this is where what seems an innocent game is going to get deadly serious. As it would in any decent horror movie.... The writing style is effortless and easy to follow. You get so immersed in what Rachel experiences that it is as if you've stepped into her life. Or at the very least, a brilliant horror movie. you are a bit edgy and suspicious, but you can't turn your eyes off the screen. Ups! I meant to say off the page... Rachel is a likeable and relatable protagonist. Don't we all want to fit in and belong without sacrificing what makes us unique? How far would we go in this desire? How far would we push other people to get what we want and what would it do to us? Goldy Moldavsky masterfully renders this universal teenage angst in this exciting YA thriller. Well-written, gripping, perceptive, The Mary Shelley is wickedly entertaining. I'm glad to have found a new author to watch out for- Goldy Moldavsky. Book details: Playing with Fire by April Henry Published by: Henry Holt and Co. (BYR) Publication date: January 19th 2021 Genres: Thriller, Young Adult Synopsis: When a fire cuts off a popular trail in the Oregon forest, a small group trapped by the flames must find another way out―or die―in Playing with Fire, an unrelenting teen-vs-nature YA thriller by New York Times bestselling author April Henry. Natalia is not the kind of girl who takes risks. Six years ago, she barely survived the house fire that killed her baby brother. Now she is cautious and always plays it safe. For months, her co-worker Wyatt has begged her to come hiking with him, and Natalia finally agrees. But when a wildfire breaks out, blocking the trail back, a perfect sunny day quickly morphs into a nightmare. With no cell service, few supplies, and no clear way out of the burning forest, a group of strangers will have to become allies if they’re going to survive. Hiking in the dark, they must reach the only way out―a foot bridge over a deep canyon―before the fire catches them. Goodreads Purchase Amazon / B&N My thoughts: A seventeen year old girl with a traumatic past and minimum first aid training, an eighteen year old Eagle Scout and ten other unfortunate hikers trapped in a forest ravaged by a roaring wildfire... April Henry's latest YA thriller took me on a roller coaster of emotions and kept me reading until the small hours. Playing with Fire is an intense story. Told in short chapters with catchy titles, it is full of twists and nail-biting, heart-stopping moments. Everything that could go wrong for Natalia, Wyatt and their companions goes wrong. How likely is it that a small group will experience all these misfortunes and medical emergencies within twenty four hours? We are talking about broken bones and dislocated joints, an encounter with an extremely dangerous wild animal, an asthma episode, a panic attack, a hypoglycemic shock in a person with diabetes and a potentially lethal allergic reaction. I'd say statistically impossible, but, boy, does it make for an exciting read! First things first...Natalia, a survivor of a domestic accident that resulted in a fire that destroyed her home and killed her little brother, goes on a first date/ hike with her co-worker Wyatt. Both of them are well-prepared and even have basic first aid kits. Of course, they do not expect that careless actions of a few criminals are going to set the forest where they are hiking on fire. There are other people on the same trail, although you wouldn't even call them a group at the beginning of this incredible adventure. You have to admire April Henry's skill at creating such a diverse group of characters with a huge range of ages, dispositions and medical conditions. They all have one goal: escape the fire and get to safety as soon as possible. They all have to face and overcome pain and fear and keep moving. They also have to pull together their meager supplies, share, support each other and work together. I learnt a lot about survival techniques and the importance of being prepared when you go on a trip in nature. Fire safety, the mnemonics for checking life signs, a technique for reducing anxiety by focusing on what your senses perceive in the real world- this book isn't just entertaining, it also has a great educational value. I would definitely recommend this exciting YA thriller, inspired by the true events of the Eagle Creek Fire. If you like adventure and survival stories with a touch of mystery and a tiny bit of romance, don't miss this book. Tenth graders Eliana and Dmitri could not be more different. He’s an outgoing, self-confident drummer in a punk band called Unexpected Turbulence. Eliana is introspective and thoughtful, and a movie buff who is living with depression. Dmitri quite literally falls for Eliana when he sees her in gym class and slams into a classmate. The pair then navigate the ins and outs of first love. Exciting, scary, unexpected, and so much more difficult than they ever imagined. They say opposites attract, but they soon realize that there is so much they just don’t understand about each other. It begs the question: How long can first love possibly last when you’re so different? My thoughts: I really enjoyed reading Len's previous book Hard-Wired, so when I saw that he co-wrote another YA novel, I was very excited about this touching, realistic, and ulitmately, sweet story. Girl on the Ferris Wheel gives us two alternating POVs. Dmitri and Eliana come from very different backgounds and have very different personalities. Quiet, insecure Eliana has four other siblings and a stay-at-home dad, whose DVD rental store went out of business, while Dmitri is a second generation American Greek with a close-knit family, trying to integrate into American life and at the same time keep their distinct culture. Dmitri is a drummer in a band and a movie buff. He is also friendly and outgoing, which helps him to navigate high school social life with a lot of confidence and ease. One of the best things about this book is that it provides a realistic representation of what it's like to live with clinical depression and what it's like to love and support a person with it. Eliana was briefly hospitalised and when she came back to school she found hersef almost isolated as a lot of her friends decided it was too complicated and awkward to be around her. Eliana's struggle with her depression is written in a heart-breakingly honest way. Her inner dialogue is fascinating, with some hilarious runaway comments on what is happening at the moment and some dark moments with repetitive self-depreciating thought patterns. It was interesting to see both perspectives on Eliana and Dmitri's relationship with all the excitement and ups and lows of figuring out the other side's feelings and opinions. Depending on your own experience, you might find one of the characters more or less relatable, but they are definitely realistic and memorable, and both of them go through a lot of growth and development. There is usually a wonderful cast of secondary characters, including Eliana's best friend Janina, Dmitri's surprisingly perceptive younger brother Niki, and adorable grandmother Yia Yia. The only thing that didn't work for me was the abundance of Happy Potter references, although I appreciate that being able to get and relate to well-known references (or the opposite, some obscure movie quotes) is a way of establishing a connection, finding your own tribe, which is a part of teen life. I would definitely recommend this book. First romantic relationships aren't easy because we still need to learn the importance of communication, but they are also exciting and genuine- like this book. Between a crush on her best friend and a rivalry brewing with the swim team star, her powers awaken early. When Mariah’s guardian meddles in her life with magic, she causes more harm than good. The soul reapers are coming and there’s a werewolf hungry for merblood. All secrets wash ashore sooner or later, and Mariah’s about to discover hers. Mixing a messy love life with deadly powers will whip up a storm of trouble. Can Mariah contain it or will she be swept up in its wake? A gripping story about a mermaid, self acceptance, and romance that literally sparks. Goodreads Pre-order Amazon / B&N / Kobo My thoughts (Book Review): I don't remember the last time I missed my train stop, because I was so engrossed in the book that all the sights and sounds of the world just disappeared for a few blessed moments. I'll start with the bad news: there is the dreaded love triangle. The good news: it works! The tension is palpable and Ally Aldridge will keep you guessing until the very end who Mariah is going to end up with. Mariah is a typical teen: sweet, but awkward, loyal, but not exactly easy to get to know. Her biggest secret (at least that's what she thinks) is that she is in love with her best friend Jace. When Jace moves to a different part of their town, Mariah knows she won't see much of him outside school. But when the summer days are over and they go back to school, Mariah discovers to her dismay that they don't have any classes together. Jace joins the football team and starts spending more and more time with his new friends, while Mariah is getting increasingly more isolated. And then a miracle happens: she makes a new friend, Ana, who invites her to join the swimming club. The only problem: Mariah isn't supposed togo anywhere near water. She has a rare allergy to salt water and her Mum makes her wear a special medical bracelet. Once in water, Mariah feels she finally found the place where she belongs. Even the team playboy, arrogant Murray has to admit she is a talented swimmer. Jace starts dating Murray's sister and needs Mariah to help him divert Murray's attention to get some time alone with his new girlfriend. Will Mariah, whose heart is broken, help him and where will this lead her? This was such a fast and entertaining read. There is something about Ally's writing style that compels you to read on and when you absolutely must put the book down, you'll really look forward to getting back to it. This is obviously Book One of a new series, so there is a bit of intoduction to the fantasy world. Mariah lived her life in the complete oblivion of her true nature and her heritage. The reader gets to discover this world at the same pace as she does, but as she focuses on her love troubles more than other important things, her knowledge remains incomplete. I can't wait to find out what happens to the other characters- we get plenty of hints that there are lots of other magical creatures waiting to make their appearance in the rest of the series. All I can say I'll be definitely looking forward to reading the next book. Hope Ally's already writing it! About Ally Aldridge: Ally was born in London but grew up in Suffolk which is where most of her YA Fantasy novels are based. She is happily married to her high school sweetheart, and together they are raising two cats, their son and daughter.
