Today I'm absolutely delighted to be on the blog tour for Val, the second book in the Hawks series by Jennie Lynn Roberts. Book details: Val by Jennie Lynn Roberts (The Hawks #2) Publication date: April 22nd 2021 Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance Synopsis: He’ll do anything to save her. And then he’ll say goodbye… Being framed for murder, captured, and tortured for weeks didn’t break Val. But seeing Alanna every day, knowing she didn’t love him as he loved her, surely would. So, he’ll do whatever is necessary to stop the king from executing her…then he’ll walk away. Forever. Queen Alanna gave up everything—including her soul mate— to secure the treaty that would end the war. Now, her husband wants her dead and any chance she had for true happiness with Val is ruined. The king’s new guards are arrayed against them, the threat of war looms large, and their enemy has the upper hand. When all is said and done, will Alanna choose to sacrifice her own happiness to save her kingdom? Or will she risk it all for a second chance at happily ever after with Val? Val, book 2 in The Hawks series, is a sexy, steamy, adult fantasy romance full of swords, shifters (kind of), and tons of action. But fair warning: This book is intended only for readers who love slow burn romance, fast-paced adventure, soul mates and found family—and characters who curse when they fight for survival. If that’s you, happy reading. Goodreads Purchase Amazon My thoughts: Earlier this year I read Tristan, the first book in the Hawks series, and it was so entertaining that I just couldn't wait to see the other other side of the story. As a very brief recap (the briefest of them all, I promise!): Tristan, Val and Val's younger sister Nim used to be inseparable childhood friends. When Tristan and Val grew up, they became royal guards. Val's duty was to protect the haughty princess Alanna, a foreigner who recently married Prince Ballamore, the throne heir. Val has changed and won't confide in anyone in the Hawks, their elite troops, and, unfortunately, this includes Tristan, for whom trust and honour are everything. In the first book we got Tristan and Nim's story, and I was really looking forward to finding out what exactly happened to Val and seeing the events from his point of view! Can Val be read as a standalone? probably yes, but I would still recommend reading Tristan. First, we go back to what happened before Val's alleged treason and find out a little bit more about Alanna's marriage and why she made Val promise to keep secret what he knew about it. Alanna's mission is to stop the war that is destroying her home country. She would sacrifice everything for the peace treaty, even her life and personal happiness. Her maid Keely and Val are the only people who know (to some extent) what's been going on and see how the prince and his cronies are turning everyone against her by spreading malicious gossip. Then Ravenstone trap happens. Whatever Alanna's feelings for Val are, she won't let him give up his life for her. Only Val has never broken a promise in his life and he would rather be tortured and die than run away from his duty of protecting Alanna. When the Hawks saved Val from the prison, Alanna was left behind and sentenced for execution. The rescue operation was absolutely brilliant and so romantic. Still, there is so much standing between the protagonists and their happily-ever-after, including the bloodthirsty king, Val's resentment over having been 'rejected' by Alanna, while also mistrusted and betrayed by his friends, misunderstanding each other's feelings and lots of other things that fortunately for us, readers, make up an excellent story! It was great to see the familiar faces and learn more about this incredible group of soldiers with quite unusual abilities. And of course, I needed to see how Nim and Tristan's relationship was progressing. Here we meet and gradually learn to love and respect a new badass heroine, who couldn't have been more different from Nimmy. We see a huge development in Alanna. All her life has been about duty, but now she isn't a little girl princess living an isolated life, now she is growing into herself and becoming a formidable queen. Captain Intense (Val) surely fell in love with a person who has her heart in the right place. I absolutely adored the book and just couldn't put it down until I turned the last page. Jennie Lynn Roberts has a very engaging writing style which flows effortlessly and transports to this amazing world with its natural beauty and diversity. If you are a fan of fantasy romance, you are going to love it! The build-up, the tension, the development, the intensity of feelings - it's all there and of course, there are plenty of adventures to entertain you. Beware that this is an adult series, so there are some very hot and steamy scenes. Thank you to Giselle from Xpresso Book Tours and the author for the review copy, provided in exchange for an honest opinion. AUTHOR BIO:
Jennie Lynn Roberts believes that every strong, kickass heroine should have control of her own story, a swoony hero to support her at every turn, and a guaranteed happily ever after. Because that doesn’t always happen in real life, she began creating her own worlds that work just the way they should. And she hasn’t looked back since. Jennie would rather be writing than doing anything else—except for spending time with her gorgeous family, of course. But when she isn’t building vibrant new worlds, she can be found nattering with friends, baking up a storm, or strolling in the woods around her home in England.
